State Secretary Applauds AG for Healthy Program

State Secretary of Health Dr. Calvin B. Johnson visited D. Ferd Swaney Elementary School Tuesday as he kicked off his statewide tour during Public Health Week 2006. Johnson recognized the school in the Albert Gallatin Area School District for its implementation of the "Take 10" exercise program. Each day, students take a 10-minute walk and, in certain classrooms, students enjoy 10 minutes of active learning and academics.

Steps to a HealthierPA-Fayette County and Fayette County Government
Promote Healthier Lifestyles for Fayette County Residents
Steps to a HealthierPA-Fayette County and the Fayette County government have teamed up to create healthier communities in our area. The Steps program will be working with the county to improve the high rates of diabetes, asthma and obesity through programs aimed at nutrition, physical activity and tobacco use.

Dietetic Interns Educate Fayette County Students on Healthy Eating Habits
Dietetic interns from WVU Hospitals supported Steps to a HealthierPA-Fayette County’s message of healthy eating through their work in the Albert Gallatin School District this past year. The interns completed rotations to gain experience in community nutrition through educating students and creating school wellness resource guides.

Fayette County Welcomes Kidshape® Program
Kidshape is a family-based weight management program for youth, 6 – 14 years of age, who are overweight. It is an innovative and highly effective program to deal with a growing and particularly difficult problem, namely the prevention and/or reversal of childhood obesity.

Comprehensive Approach to Monitor and Manage Diabetes Care and Outcomes
Now Available in Fayette County
Residents of Fayette County now have access to a community diabetes initiative headed by the University of Pittsburgh Diabetes Institute and funded by the Department of Defense. The Diabetes Institute in partnership with Steps to a HealthierPA-Fayette County will begin efforts to help physicians and patients better manage diabetes.
